Setting Associations in Other Browsers

"Setting associations" means adding capabilities to your browser by configuring it to call another program to handle a specific kind of data. For example, you might install an Adobe Acrobat viewer to display .pdf files. The concept is basically the same as defining data file types in Windows 3.1's Program Manager or Windows 95's Explorer: you associate a file extension with the appropriate program.

To access all the features of your WinMag CD, you'll need to configure your browser to use two applications:

WMLaunch. We use this utility to launch applications from the browser. (For security reasons, browsers don't have that capability built in.) Associate the extension .wm with the application wmlaunch.exe in the root directory of the CD-ROM. (If your CD-ROM is D:, d:\wmlaunch.exe is the full path to the program.)

An unzipper. Zip files are a compressed archive format used by most of the Superior Shareware programs on this disc. To access them, you must install an unzipping utility like WinZip, PKZip, or Norton File Manager to your hard drive. If you have such a utility, associate the extension .zip with your unzipping utility (e.g. c:\winzip\winzip.exe for a default installation of WinZip). If you don't already have such a utility, you can install an unzipper from this CD (\SEARCHER\INSTALL\INSTALL.EXE)

If you're not sure how to set associations in your browser, see its online help. Terms vary, so the information you need may be found under a heading like "configuring external viewers" or "selecting helper applications."
